Troubleshooting
Longview Tax includes troubleshooting features that can be useful when resolving issues or working with Longview Support Services.
Working with Longview Tax log and history files
You can use Longview Tax log and history files to review activity such as Longview Tax launch, initialization, and error information.
Longview Tax includes the following log and history files:
- LongviewTaxClient.log — This log must be enabled manually and lists activity related to the Longview Tax launch and initialization process, and error information. For information on enabling this logging feature, see Enabling the Longview Tax log file.
- LongviewTaxhistory.log — This history file is created automatically and lists all Longview Tax Application Framework activity, excluding activity from input apps and reports.
By default, Longview Tax log and history files are created in the following folder on the user’s local machine:
C:\Users\username\Documents\Longview
To review Longview Tax log and history files, open them in your preferred text editor.

Enabling the Longview Tax log file
If requested by Longview Support Services, you can enable the Longview Tax log file to log diagnostic information related to the Longview Tax launch and initialization process, and error information.
To enable the Longview Tax log file
- Create a file in your preferred text editor, and name it LongviewTaxClient.

Save it, with the file extension .log, in the following folder on the local machine from which to log Longview Tax activity:
C:\Users\username\Documents\Longview\<LVID>\logs
- When you are finished logging the pertinent information, delete this file.
Caution: Logging Longview Tax diagnostic information may impact system resources. Make sure to delete this file when you are finished troubleshooting.
Working with Tax Provision calculation log, error, and history files
You can use the Tax Provision calculation log, error, and history files to view Application Framework activity and errors related to calculation logic during implementation or when troubleshooting. You can access the Tax Provision calculation log, error, and history files directly from the server, or using the Events tool, if your Server Configuration and file paths are configured for this feature.

Specifying Tax Provision calculation log file options
By default, Tax Provision creates individual log files. If required, you can customize options for the Tax Provision calculation log file.
To specify Tax Provision calculation log options
- In Longview Component Manager, click Longview Application Administrator.
- In the contents window, double-click Attributes.
- Double-click SYMBOL. The symbol attributes display in the contents window.
- Right-click the AZAFELGTYP attribute, and select Set Value. The Attribute Values dialog opens.
- In the Dimension lists, select Controls.
- Expand the APPFRMWRK group, and then the AFEVENTS group.
- Expand the group for the relevant tax process.
- Select the check box for the events for which to apply the new attribute value.
- In the Values pane, specify a value in the Enter New Value field. Values can be one of the following:
- OFF — No server log file is created.
- DAILY — A new server log file is created every day, and new information is appended each time the process runs. The file name includes a data stamp.
- INDIVIDUAL — A new server log file is created every time the process runs. This is the default value.
- Click Assign to value. The Value is assigned to the symbol.
- When you are finished, click Apply.
Specifying Tax Provision calculation error file options
By default, Tax Provision creates individual error files. If required, you can customize options for the Tax Provision calculation error files.
To specify error file options in Tax Provision
- In Longview Component Manager, click Longview Application Administrator.
- In the contents window, double click Attributes.
- Double-click SYMBOL. The symbol attributes display in the contents window.
- Right-click the AZAFERRTYP attribute, and select Set Value. The Attribute Values dialog opens.
- In the Dimension lists, select Controls.
- Expand the APPFRMWRK group, and then the AFEVENTS group.
- Expand the group for the relevant tax process.
- Select the check box for the events for which to apply the new attribute value.
- In the Values pane, specify a value in the Enter New Value field. Values can be one of the following:
- DAILY — A new file is created every day, and new information is appended each time the process runs. The file name includes a data stamp.
- INDIVIDUAL — A new file is created every time the process runs. This is the default value.
- Click Assign to value. The Value is assigned to the symbol.
- When you are finished, click Apply.
Specifying history file options
By default, Tax Provision does not create history files. If required, you can customize options for the Tax Provision calculation history files.
Note: Generating history files can adversely affect performance. Longview suggests that you leave history files on during implementation and disable them once your implementation is complete.
To specify history file options in Tax Provision
- In Longview Component Manager, click Longview Application Administrator.
- In the contents window, double click Attributes.
- Double-click SYMBOL. The symbol attributes display in the contents window.
- Right-click the AZAFHISTYP attribute, and select Set Value. The Attribute Values dialog opens.
- In the Dimension lists, select Controls.
- Expand the APPFRMWRK group, and then the AFEVENTS group.
- Expand the group for the relevant tax process.
- Select the check box for the events for which to apply the new attribute value.
- In the Values pane, specify a value in the Enter New Value field. Values can be one of the following:
- OFF — No file is created.
- DAILY — A new file is created every day, and new information is appended each time the process runs. The file name includes a data stamp.
- INDIVIDUAL — A new file is created every time the process runs. This is the default value.
- Click Assign to value. The Value is assigned to the symbol.

- When you are finished troubleshooting, change the value back to OFF.
Caution: Generating Tax Provision calculation history may impact system resources. Make sure to turn this feature off when you are finished troubleshooting.
Viewing version information
It may be useful at times to view version information about your Longview Tax system.
To view version information
- Click About in the Longview Tax toolbar. The About Longview dialog opens.
- Review version information for the following:

- When you are finished, click OK to close the About Longview dialog.
Viewing Longview Tax online Help
Longview Tax includes context sensitive online Help to assist you in finding the information you need. Depending on where the focus is in the application, the Longview Tax Administrator’s Help, Tax Provision User’s Help, Tax Provision Implementer’s Help, or Task Management Help opens.
You can access Help in the following ways:
- Click Help in the Longview Tax toolbar to view Tax Provision User’s Help.
- Click the Help button in the toolbar of a report to view general information on using reports on the web.
- Press F1 anywhere in the application, including in input apps, to open context-sensitive Help for the area that is in focus in the workspace. In this case, focus is the last place that you clicked in Longview Tax.
- In editors and tools, click the Help button on the administrative toolbar to open context-sensitive Help.
If you are working in an input app or report, the online Help opens in the workspace in split-screen mode on the right of the input app or report.
Note: The Longview Tax Administrator must deploy the online Help to the web server. If the Help does not open, contact your administrator.
