Maintaining task management jurisdictions
You can use the Jurisdictions editor in Task Management to add and maintain jurisdictions. The Jurisdictions editor includes two different modes: jurisdiction properties mode and entity properties mode.
When the editor is in jurisdiction properties mode, you can perform these tasks:
- Adding jurisdictions
- Copying jurisdiction settings
- Modifying jurisdictions
- Exporting jurisdiction information to Microsoft Excel
When the editor is in entity properties mode, you can perform these tasks:
- Applying jurisdictions to an entity
- Copying entity settings for jurisdictions
- Exporting jurisdiction information to Microsoft Excel
Adding jurisdictions
You can add jurisdictions for Tax Tasks using the Jurisdictions editor.
To add a jurisdiction:
- In the Task Management navigation pane, click Administration.
- Expand Entities, and then click Jurisdictions. The Jurisdictions editor opens in the workspace.
- Select any jurisdiction in the list.
Note: If you select the parent for the new jurisdiction, that symbol is automatically set in the Parent field.
- Click Jurisdiction, and select one of the following jurisdiction levels:
Caution: The level for a jurisdiction cannot be changed.
- National—Select this option to create a new national jurisdiction.
- Regional—Select this option to create a new regional jurisdiction. You must have an existing national jurisdiction in order to create a regional jurisdiction.
- Local—Select this option to create a new local jurisdiction. You must have an existing regional jurisdiction in order to create a local jurisdiction.
Note: The national and regional jurisdiction level labels may differ depending on your system configuration. For example, your company’s national jurisdiction label may be set to Federal and your regional jurisdiction label to State.
- Complete the following fields:
Field Notes Name
Type a name for the jurisdiction. Jurisdiction names can be up to 31 alphanumeric characters, and can contain underscores ( _ ) and periods ( . ).
Description
Type a description for the jurisdiction. Jurisdiction descriptions can be up to 100 characters.
Sort Order
Specify a numeric value from 1 and up representing the order of the symbol with respect to its parent. By default, the sort order for added symbols is 10 higher than the last child of the same parent symbol.
If you specify a value of 0, the symbol appears at the bottom of the list
Level
This field displays the jurisdiction level you selected in step 4 and cannot be changed.
Tax Types
Click the drop-down arrow, and select the applicable tax types for the jurisdiction.
For information on setting the tax types that are available for selection, see Configuring Task Management settings.
Addresses
Type the addresses for the relevant tax authorities for the jurisdiction. Separate addresses with a semicolon ( ; ). Do not include spaces before or after each address.
Forms
Type the tax forms that apply to the jurisdiction. Separate forms with a semicolon ( ; ). Do not include spaces before or after each form
Parent
Select the parent for the jurisdiction. The permitted parents depend on the jurisdiction level you selected in step 4.
- If you selected National, this field does not appear and the parent is automatically set to JurisdictionsT.
- If you selected Regional, the parent must be set to a national jurisdiction.
- If you selected Local, the parent must be set to a regional jurisdiction.
- Click OK. The jurisdiction is added to the list.
- Click Save.
Copying jurisdiction settings
If you want a jurisdiction to have the same settings for Tax Types, Addresses, and Forms as another existing jurisdiction, you can copy the existing jurisdiction’s settings.
To copy jurisdiction settings:
- In the Task Management navigation pane, click Administration.
- Expand Entities, and then click Jurisdictions. The Jurisdictions editor opens in the workspace.
- Select the jurisdiction you want to copy settings to.
- Click Copy Jurisdiction Settings. The Copy Jurisdiction Settings dialog opens.
- Type the name of the jurisdiction you want to copy from, or select a jurisdiction in the drop-down list. Alternatively, you can use the symbol selector. For more information on searching for symbols, see Using the Symbol Selector.
- Click Copy. The jurisdiction settings are copied to the specified jurisdiction.
- Click Save.
Applying jurisdictions to an entity
You can use the Jurisdictions editor to specify the jurisdictions that apply to a specific entity.
To apply jurisdictions to an entity:
- In the Task Management navigation pane, click Administration.
- Expand Entities, and then click Jurisdictions. The Jurisdictions editor opens in the workspace.
- On the editor toolbar, click Entity. The Symbol Selector appears.
- Type the name of the appropriate entity or select an entity in the drop-down list. Alternatively, you can use the symbol selector. For more information on searching for symbols, see Using the Symbol Selector.
- Click Update. The editor switches to entity properties mode.
- Select Applicable for each jurisdiction that applies to the selected entity.
- Click Save.
- To return to the jurisdiction properties view, click Entity. The Symbol Selector appears.
- Delete the contents of the Entity field, and then click Update. The editor returns to jurisdiction properties mode.
Copying entity settings for jurisdictions
If you have applied jurisdictions to an entity and you have another entity that should use similar jurisdictions, you can copy the entity’s settings to the other entity.
To copy entity settings for jurisdictions:
- In the Task Management navigation pane, click Administration.
- Expand Entities, and then click Jurisdictions. The Jurisdictions editor opens in the workspace.
- On the editor toolbar, click Entity. The Symbol Selector appears.
- Type the name of the entity to copy settings to, or select the entity in the drop-down list. Alternatively, you can use the symbol selector. For more information on searching for symbols, see Using the Symbol Selector.
- Click Update. The editor switches to entity properties mode.
- Click Copy Entity Settings. The Copy Entity Settings dialog opens.
- Complete the following fields:
- Click Copy. The entity settings are copied to the specified entities.
Field Notes Entity to copy settings from
Type the name of the entity you want to copy from, or select an entity in the drop-down list. Alternatively, you can use the symbol selector.

Replace settings for
Type the name of the entity to copy settings to, or select the entity in the drop-down list. Alternatively, you can use the symbol selector.
You can specify one or more leaf or parent symbols. If you specify a parent symbol, the entity settings are copied to the parent and all its children. Separate entities with a semicolon ( ; ).
- When you are finished, delete the contents of the Entity field, and then click Update to return to jurisdiction properties mode.
- Click Save.
Modifying jurisdictions
If necessary, you can make changes to an existing jurisdiction. You cannot modify a jurisdiction’s Level (National, Regional, or Local).
To modify a jurisdiction:
- In the Task Management navigation pane, click Administration.
- Expand Entities, and then click Jurisdictions. The Jurisdictions editor opens in the workspace.
- Select the jurisdiction to modify.
- Click Properties.
- Modify the following fields as required:
Field Notes Name

- Click OK. The jurisdiction is added to the list.
- Click Save.
Exporting jurisdiction information to Microsoft Excel
You can use the Jurisdictions editor to export jurisdiction information from both editor modes to Microsoft Excel.
To export jurisdiction information to Microsoft Excel:
- In the Task Management navigation pane, click Administration.
- Expand Entities, and then click Jurisdictions. The Jurisdictions editor opens in the workspace.
- Click Export to Excel. A dialog opens.
- For Layout, select one of the following:
- To export all symbols fully expanded, select Expanded View.
- To export only the symbols visible in the current hierarchy expansion state, select Current View.
Note: For more information on expanding and collapsing the symbol hierarchy, see Using context menus.
- For Options, select one of the following:
- To export both jurisdiction and entity settings, select Jurisdiction and entity settings.
- To export entity settings, select Entity settings.
- To export jurisdiction settings, select Jurisdiction settings.
- Navigate to the location where you want to save the file.
- Type the name for the export file.
- Click Save. The file opens in Microsoft Excel.
